With interiors, when blocking in the painting, it's often best to start with the darks and wipe out the lights but sometimes a scene, especially one with figures, requires accurate drawing so it's important to get the proportions, angles and gesture right. I started this with a very geometric approach to drawing and massing in the big dark shapes. Then I added just enough detail to describe the light flowing across the tables.
